July Action from Puerto Vallarta

Richard E. Baker

Sometimes a good woman will guide and encourage her husband to make the correct decision about his life. Not every man listens. Fortunately Jonathan Garcia Medina (19-1-0) did.

Medina, now 30 years old and with two children, suffered from the problems of many fighters - poor management. To earn as much money as quickly as possible his team threw him into poor and unproductive bouts, bouts sure to keep him stagnant. He was often promised training expenses if he would take time off to train. He was never paid. The promising welterweight appeared to be stalled. With his tremendous skill, including 15 KOs, he was on a one way road to nowhere. His confidence began to fade. When he suffered his only loss to Levan Ghvamichana (12-1-1) in 2014, Medina decided to quit. He had a family to support and earnings from boxing was not doing the job.

His wife Alandra knew that quitting boxing was the wrong decision. Without boxing, her husband would be miserable. She knew he was born to box. Many nights they sat for long discussions. Time was running out. Medina was in his prime and Alandra knew a boxer gets only one shot to live his dream. What he needed was a decent manager. They sought the help of Ray Frye who has recently been building a stable of mostly Mexican boxers. With his new promotional company MAKINA he seamed like the right choice. Fry, recognizing Medina’s talent, signed him knowing he would have to move him quickly because of his age. At 30 he is in his prime. Medina was back in the game, his lovely and supportive wife at his side.

On Friday, July 9th, he stepped into the ring against 6-10-0 Victor Campos Capetillo at the Arena Coliseo Demonio Blanco in Puerto Vallarta. The arena is perfect for boxing, about the size of the old Blue Horizon and not a bad seat in the house.

Capetillo is no slouch, but a hardened professional. That toughness did not help him. Although he was aggressive and put up a good fight, he was still toppled by Medina in round 2.

Frye has big plans for Medina. After two more fights he will put him in for a minor title title. That will give Medina in the top 15. Another fight or two and he should get a championship bout.
